There’s a growing tide of thought in Australia and around the world that we can’t or shouldn’t just buy our way out of this post pandemic-induced recession. What if there is a better way? One that balances the needs of the people AND the planet?
Our environment took a hit during lockdown, reliance on single use products increased and some countries suspended recycling programs, sending all waste products to landfill. But at the same time the planet also quietly staged a resurgence of its own. Air pollution decreased, flamingos returned to Mumbai, and worldwide, beaches became cleaner.
As political commentators, social advocates and environmentalists debate a universal wage, increased social housing and emission caps, we can be forgiven for thinking we – as individuals – can’t be part of the change for a better future. These issues seem too big and too hard to deal with. But together we can make a change and create a better future.
As a child, I remember hearing the phrase think globally act locally it’s stuck with me ever since. It strengthens my belief that small actions count and that each time I chose not to use a plastic bag or I grow a new plant I’m making a difference and reinforcing my commitment to a cleaner future. I can’t change everything but I can change lots of small things.
Since becoming a Declutter Coach I’ve shared my environmental values with hundreds of clients. I’ve helped them to declutter and downsize without just dumping everything into landfill. Together we have donated, repurposed or recycled tonnes of extraneous belongings. Shedding yourself of your excess can be stressful and often overwhelming. However, knowing the things you no longer need are going to make a positive difference in another person’s life can bring great comfort with an added bonus of helping the planet.
So I invite you to come and join me in my garden. Pull up a seat in the shade and enjoy a tall glass of water while we quietly stage a local revolution.
